Tommy James certainly hasn’t forgotten his roots.

The legendary rocker and Niles native, who has enjoyed a 40-plus year music career and sold more than 100 million records — including 23 gold singles and nine gold and platinum albums — will return to his hometown Aug. 17.

James will be at Majerek’s Readers World to sign copies of his book “Me, the Mob and the Music,” which was released this year. He will be on hand from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. before heading to Niles High School for a homecoming event at 7 p.m.

Tom Majerek, owner of Majerek’s Readers World, said he has been working to bring James to Niles since his book was released in February.

“I had sent quite a few e-mails to several people to try to invite him in for the book signing,” he said.

And when Majerek finally got it scheduled, he was excited.

“Growing up in Niles, I’ve been a huge fan of his songs,” Majerek said. “One of my first concerts I saw in my life was when he performed at the Apple Festival in Niles in the 1970s. It will be a cool thing to invite him into my bookstore.”

In an interview with the Star in April, James said he has fond memories of Niles and is proud of where he grew up.

“I really get excited when we drive through Niles,” he said. “It was a wonderful place to grow up. I still have a home there. I have maintained a lot of friendships.”

The first third of James’ book chronicles his life as a young musician in Niles with much of the remainder being a tell-all story about his relationship with the “godfather” of the record industry, Morris Levy, and Roulette records.

James was honored as a “favorite son” by the Michigan Senate on May 25 at the state capitol.

Copies of James’ book are now available for purchase at Majerek’s Readers World.
