NILES -- The Niles City Council held its last meeting in the council chambers in the former Niles Senior Citizens Center at 16 S. Third St. Monday night.
The building has been home to the city council's meetings since Dec. 10, 1984.
Niles Mayor Michael McCauslin said the next council meeting, set for Monday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m., will be held in the council chambers in the new Niles Fire Department, located on East Main Street, directly across from the entrance to Silverbrook Cemetery.
The fire department moved into its new station over the weekend. The move leaves vacant the former police and fire stations, located at the corner of Broadway and Third streets, which were completed in May 1939.
Also Monday night, the council and City Development Director Juan Ganum said they seek Niles city residents to serve on a Community Development Citizens Committee, which is being formed to comply with Community Development Block Grant regulations.
Niles Fourth Ward Councilmember Scott Clark asked Ganum how members for the committee will be chosen.
Ganum said he was going to expand the membership of the city's current Master Plan committee into the Community Development Citizens Committee.
However, Clark asked that Ganum start from scratch and form a citizens' committee made up of two or three residents from each of the city's fourth ward, an idea embraced by others on the council and Ganum.
Ganum said forming the committee quickly is important and asked the city council to help by nominating members from ward they represent.
Ganum also said city residents who would like to serve on the committee are encouraged to call him at 683-4700.
