An Allegan, Mich. man has been charged with 11 counts following an alleged attempted Edwardsburg bank robbery and vehicle accident in Cassopolis Thursday morning.

Roy Evink, 25, was arraigned in Cass County4th District Court Friday afternoon for charges of felony flee and elude; attempted armed robbery; receiving and concealing stolen property; possession of stolen property; felonious driving; and various other charges related to the attempted armed robbery, subsequent pursuit and the traffic crash that occurred thereafter.

His bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. Evink is currently lodged at the Cass County Jail.

One of the victims of the vehicle the suspect reportedly crashed into – Amanda Gonce, 29, of Cassopolis – remains at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo in stable condition while the other three victims have been treated and released.

Cass County deputies were called to Chemical Bank in Edwardsburg at 9:52 a.m.

Thursday to the report that a suspicious subject was loitering in and near the bank and gave a description of a vehicle that he had left in. The Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department responded to the scene and immediately observed a vehicle matching that description. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle it fled at a high rate of speed northbound on M-62 from the Village of Edwardsburg, and the officer gave chase.

The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed, at one point avoiding stop sticks deployed by sheriff deputies. The vehicle continued into Cassopolis on M-62 and then collided with a vehicle turning onto Hilton Street in Cassopolis.

After the 10-mile pursuit, Evink reportedly fled the scene on foot uninjured. Law enforcement officials apprehended him a short time later.

Amanda Gonce was driving the vehicle Evink allegedly hit. Also in the vehicle was Angel Howard, 28, of Vandalia; Travis Gonce, 2, of Cassopolis; and Shane Howard, 3, of Vandalia. Both children were in child seats. The victims were transported to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac and Lakeland Hospital in Niles by Life Care and Coloma ambulance services. All were released by 3 p.m. except Amanda Gonce.
Cassopolis and Penn Township fire departments assisted in extricating the passengers from the damaged vehicle.

It was determined that the vehicle used by the suspect was stolen April 7 from Kalamazoo.
