Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey requested to use $30,000 of the Niles Township police department’s fund balance to purchase a third police vehicle at the Nile Charter Township board meeting Monday night.

The current fund balance is at $74,908.

“It would still leave $44,908 in the fund balance for emergencies,” Bailey said. “During busy times, we could have three cars out there.”

Bailey will write a written request to the board, at which time the board will make a decision during a future board meeting.

Also Monday, the board adopted a resolution to allow Department of Public Works Director Gary Schrader to accept bid for a new truck for the DPW.

“For what it’s worth, I took a look at it,” township supervisor Jim Kidwell said, “and it’s in bad shape. The engine will not fire.”
