Euchre tourney to benefit Brandywine student engineers

Invention is at the heart of a Euchre Tournament being held by the Brandywine Science Club to raise money for their participation in the annual Rube Goldberg Competition, a national contest that challenges both high school and college students in the engineering of specialized machines.

The tournament will be held Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Brandywine High School, 1700 Bell Rd., in the cafeteria.

Students took part in the competition last year, building a machine that used the power of a single quarter to illuminate an energy efficient light bulb.

This year the challenge is quite appropriate to the current social climate as well.

Students are being handed the task of engineering a machine that effectively dispenses “an appropriate amount of hand sanitizer” into one’s hand.

Students must be sure the machine completes the task with a minimum of 20 steps and have a run of no more than two minutes.

The competition will be held at Purdue University.

The Euchre tournament will include prizes to be awarded to the winners and the cost is $10 per team.
