NILES -- U.S. Rep. Fred Upton heralded "good news on the economy" to Dowagiac Rotarians' pizza picnic Thursday in Rotary Park.
Looking ahead to after the August congressional break, Upton said, "Sept. 4 we're going to start .kids on the Internet. Just like we have dot-com, dot-org and dot-gov, .kids is going to be earmarked for anyone like my son, 12 and under. No bad Web sites, no pornography.
As a member of the Education Committee, Upton acknowledged Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Fred L. Mathews and SMC President Dr. David M. Mathews.
The St. Joseph Republican said the House of Representatives "finished up a pretty good, positive agenda. We dealt with 11 of the 13 spending bills. Two remain. One will be pretty quick because it's the D.C. (District of Columbia) appropriation bill. The other, transportation, I think we'll deal with that literally the first week we're back."
Accompanying Upton to his third Rotary meeting this week were John Proos, his district director for offices in St. Joseph and Kalamazoo, and a University of Michigan sophomore from Watervliet.
