Chieftain fans have had plenty to be excited about these days.
The winter sports teams have gotten off to an impressive start.
Don't looks at wins and losses, but look at the fact that all three teams have been extremely competitive so far this season.
The Dowagiac varsity wrestling team hasn't skipped a beat from last year. The Chieftains are 8-0 heading into their own invitational tournament on Saturday.
John Green has stepped in to replace former coach Chuck Rubino and seems to have the Chieftains rolling along once again.
For those of you who missed Tuesday night's basketball game against Benton Harbor, I feel bad for you.
Dowagiac played extremely well against a talented Tiger program.
The Chieftains had a chance to pull within seven points of the Tigers with four minutes to play, but could not convert some free throws and a three-pointer which would have gotten them right back in the thick of things.
Still, despite the loss, the Chieftains looked good and showed a lot of promise.
Dowagiac's varsity volleyball team seems to be back on the right track.
Dowagiac has a 3-2-2 overall record in its first week of competition.
New coach Teri Tucker seems to have brought some fun back into the program and it has resulted in better play from the Chieftains.
Dowagiac was competitive at its season opening tournament at Gull Lake and played well against Buchanan last Monday night.
If you haven't gotten a chance to come out and see any of these teams yet, I suggest you do.
Dowagiac will be providing its fans with some surprises this winter I can tell you that.
I already have had more fun this winter covering those teams than I did all of last season.
I don't expect these kids to win every game they play in, but I do expect our athletes to be competitive.
I'm not sure that was the case for much of last season.
New coaches have breathed new life into volleyball and basketball programs, while Green is continuing Dowagiac's tradition of excellence in wrestling.
I expect big things in the new year for the Chieftains. Come along for the ride.
High school sports is a great value for the dollar.
