Michael Bennett: More men needed behind the lens

I admit it — I am a stats geek.

As the registered users of our Summer Fun Photo Contest grow, I am trying to understand why men don’t shoot or submit photographs. Well, some do. Nine (11 percent) of our registered users are men, and one is me, and I don’t count. Half the men are grandpas like me and the other half are submitting some very professional looking shots.

Women represent 89 percent (70) of our registered users, including Debbie Brenner of Niles, who won a large pizza her way from Pizza Transit last week in our early Leader picks. There are fantastic photographers.

To date, there have been 114 photographs submitted, and many of them are outstanding. We try to publish at least one every day. Unlike our first photo contest, “A Year in Review,” we are receiving far more pictures of people and pets having fun. The scenery pictures are quite good, although I like the good mix.

Your photographs help highlight the wonderful life experiences happening here in southwest Michigan. Check out the pictures. There is a great series of shots of “Willow the Duck.” Willow can be seen on a raft, drinking from a hose and sitting by a campfire.

This contest is open to anyone over age 13, although only four youngsters under 18 have submitted photographs. I would have thought with their knowledge of technology and smartphones we would have seen far more from that age group.

So my plea is, more photographs from the men and the youngsters. By Labor Day, I hope to see at least 500 photographs posted.

My next call is to Pure Michigan, as I think they may be interested in using some of these great shots for promoting the state.
