Tired of chaperones turning a blind eye to “provocative dancing and consumption of alcohol,” some Edwardsburg students decided to take matters into their own hands.

They accepted responsibility for hosting an alternative prom with a more Christian atmosphere.

“We wanted to try to provide a better atmosphere,” senior Taylor Kanaby said.

The first prom took place in 2011 in the gymnasium at Encore School of the Arts in Dowagiac.

Taylor has put together another committee with sophomores Carrie Easton and Tylar Kowalewski for “In the Garden,” which takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Lake.

More than 50 students attended the inaugural prom in Dowagiac.

Kanaby, who plans to major in, said she’s had “tons of help” and expects 60 to 75 to attend, including students from Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan.

Parents and chaperones for the event include Darcey Kowalewski, Rob Kowalewski, Jeannie Kanaby, Kristi Easton, Kelli Bounds, Sharm Haimbaugh, Rhonda Hudson, Christine DeLand, Gail Bliss, Jim Garnett, Julie Weaver and Amy Heflin.

Tickets are $20 per person, which includes dinner.

A professional photographer will be provided to capture the memories being made.
