Leaky school roof gets fix

The roof of Ottawa Elementary School in Buchanan is leaking, and school officials are finding a way to fix it.

Supt. Andrea van der Laan said the district would be sending out bids this week to several roofing companies.

She said the district is looking at taking out a low interest Qualified Zoning Academy Bond (between 0 and 1 percent) to finance the approximately $300,000 project.

The district would use money from its capital fund to pay back the bond. Van der Laan said the capital fund is normally used for things such as replacing carpet and broken furniture and painting walls.

“We are redirecting some of that money so the buildings may not see new carpeting for a while,” she said.

The goal is to fix the roof before the beginning of next school year.

“It’s a noisy process, and we don’t want kids in the building while it’s going on,” van der Laan said.

The district’s capital fund gets about $200,000 a year from taxpayers, who would not see a tax increase because of the roof fix.
