Dowagiac’s Rotary Club has a brand new president in Cass County Commissioner Bob Wagel. The club also recognized a local Rotarian, Don Woodhouse, as the 2012 Dowagiac Rotary Hero.

During the regular meeting of the club Thursday, outgoing President Barbara Groner thanked club members and the past year’s officers for their work throughout the season.

Groner also announced the new president and 2012-2013 officers and directors.

Wagel took the oath of office and introduced Victor Fitz, Cass County prosecutor, as president-elect; Jennifer Ray, Cass District Library director, as secretary; Mike Franks as treasurer; and directors Phil Esarey, John Kasper and Don Woodhouse.

“Our club has had a very successful year thanks to the involvement of most of our members,” Groner said.

As Wagel took the oath and received his pin, he talked of the future year ahead of the club and what he hopes to see.

“I hope we have fun, learn from speakers and increase recognition about the Rotary Club,” said Wagel, who said he was looking forward to his new role.

Groner also took the time to recognize Wilber Breseman, member of the former Marcellus Rotary Club, who was awarded the Golden Trowel Award. Woodhouse was nicknamed “Mr. Rotary” for his selection as the Rotary Hero, which named 30 other heroes in the Rotary 6360 District.
