CASSOPOLIS — An 18-year-old Dowagiac man who recently completed a 150-day jail sentence for resisting arrest apparently hasn’t learned his lesson.

Jamel Vincent was back in Cass County Circuit Court Friday for sentencing on charges of again resisting and obstructing police.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Dodge sentenced Vincent to 240 days in Cass County Jail with credit for 52 days served.

At 18, Vincent already has amassed three felony and five misdemeanor convictions.

“You have a serious criminal record here that looks like you are building a foundation for a prison term,” Dodge said. “You need to stop this right now because next time I see you that is probably going to be the outcome.”

At around 2 a.m. April 18, Dodge said Dowagiac police were dispatched to Michigan Avenue in Dowagiac for a fight in progress. There, police found Vincent drunk and disturbing the peace. Vincent ran from police, but was later caught and booked at the Cass County Jail, where he was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.17. Dodge said Vincent also fought with officers at the jail.

“I’m sure probably none of this would’ve happened if you weren’t drinking,” Dodge said. “Here you are drunk, it’s 2 o’clock in the morning and not too much good happens at that time.”

Vincent pleaded guilty as a habitual offender third to resisting and obstructing police on April 25.

He was previously sentenced to 150 days in jail for resisting and obstructing police on Oct. 21.
