Organized by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Great Backyard Bird Count, taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Fernwood, 13988 Range Line Rd., Niles,  is an annual event to engage people from across America in citizen-science. By counting the birds and submitting the data, scientists can have a real-time picture of bird populations and habitats. Stop by the Nature Center  at 1 p.m. to learn how to identify common winter birds and at 3 p.m. to learn how to feed them. In between, help tally the birds at Fernwood’s feeders. Free with paid Fernwood admission.
