Students at Lake Michigan College now have more options in pursuing a future career.

The two-year community college — with campuses in Niles, Benton Harbor and South Haven — is adding two certificate programs to its ever-growing list of classes.

Students can now earn a certificate of achievement in logistics and a certificate of achievement in energy production technology/line worker.

Both programs were created when area employers told the college they needed skilled graduates in those areas, said Laura Kraklau, director of marketing services for LMC.

Both courses are being offered at LMC’s Bertrand Crossing Campus, 1905 Foundation Drive, Niles. Support courses for both programs can be taken at other LMC locations, said Kraklau.

Certificate of Achievement in Logistics is a 30-credit hour program that gives students background in domestic transportation, warehousing, inventory control, purchasing and knowledge of logistics technologies and regulatory requirements.

The certificate of achievement program in energy production technology/line worker provides a new area of specialization in the college’s energy technology production program.

The line worker concentration teaches students the basic skills needed to maintain the country’s power grid and communication lines. Graduates would be prepared for jobs with utility, phone and cable companies, and local municipalities. It is a 36-credit hour program estimated to have an enrollment of as many as 24 students.

The line worker certificate program is an extension of a non-credit pilot program offered by the college in 2010, said Kraklau. Indiana Michigan Power helped get the program started with a $25,000 gift to LMC.

Graduates from the new certificate programs can apply the credits toward an associate’s degree in general studies or an associate’s degree in general technology, Kraklau said.
