DOWAGIAC — Southwestern Michigan College’s outstanding athletic performance propelled them to seize the 20th MCCAA Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy.

Their noteworthy accomplishments included clinching two conference championships, establishing them as formidable competitors across various sports.

The Roadrunners showcased their dominance across multiple disciplines, securing the MCCAA wrestling title while claiming a share of the MCCAA Western Conference crown in women’s basketball. Their impressive finishes in the MCCAA men’s and women’s cross country championship meets further solidified their standing.

With a total of 92.31 points, Southwestern Michigan College outpaced their competitors, with Lansing Community College trailing behind at 84.13 points. Mid Michigan Community College secured third place with 80.44 points. Mott Community College claimed the fourth spot, while Grand Rapids College rounded out the top five.

The Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy, initiated in 1958, honors the team with the best average of finishes across their sports. Teams accumulate points based on their performance in each sport, with champions receiving 100 points and subsequent teams earning lower point totals relative to the number of teams in the conference/sport. Bonus points are awarded for winning or finishing as runners-up in MCCAA Championships or MCCAA sports. The final point totals are divided by the number of sports to determine the winner.

Charlie Chanter, the esteemed Executive Secretary of the MCCAA, dedicated 42 years to the association and played a pivotal role in refining the process of awarding the All-Sports Trophy. Additionally, he served as the MCCAA golf chair for many years, leaving an indelible mark on the association’s sporting legacy. Chanter’s contributions were invaluable, and his passing in 2019 marked the end of an era in MCCAA history.
