NILES — During the Niles City Council’s Monday meeting, City of Niles Mayor Nick Shelton issued a proclamation to the Daughters of The American Revolution in honor of Women Veterans Recognition Day.

The day, celebrated yearly on June 12, recognizes, honors and remembers the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which in 1948 allowed women the right to permanently serve in the regular armed forces.

The DAR is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in supporting the American Revolution. A non-profit group, the organization promotes education and patriotism.

“I encourage all citizens to join me in paying tribute in honoring all women veterans who have served and continue to serve our great country,” Shelton said. “I thank you for your sacrifices, your valor for protecting us, putting your country first and defending our rights. Thank you all very much.”
