Berrien Springs sweep Lakeland titles

NILES — There was no doubt about who was the best track program in the Lakeland Conference following the league meet at Brandywine High School Wednesday.
Berrien Springs easily won both the boys and girls championships.
The Shamrock girls team scored 132 points, while Buchanan was the runner-up with 99 points and host Brandywine third with 63 points. Dowagiac finished fourth with 51 points. Benton Harbor did not field a team.
Berrien Springs was even more dominant in the boy’s portion of the meet as it won with 184 points. Dowagiac was second with 68 Buchanan third with 51 points and Brandywine fourth with 37 points.
Benton Harbor placed fifth with four points.
Brandywine and Buchanan had numerous conference champions in the girl’s portion of the meet.
Alaina Nagel, Madeline Young, Adyson Baker and Emma Miller were all double winners for the Bucks.
Nagel won the 400-meters with a time of 1:04.36, while she was also a member of Buchanan’s winning 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams. Nagel was joined on the 1,600-meter unit by Audrey Lietz, Madeline Young and Ava Graham. They ran a time of 4:24.03.
The 3,200-meter team consisted of Nagel, Baker, Sydney Greaves and Brooke Schlutt. They posted a time of 11:36.93. Miller also won the 3,200-meters with a time of 13:44.09 while Baker also won the pole vault with a height of 7-6.
Buchanan’s Zoe Griggs was the conference champion in the shot put with a toss of 33-3.
For the Bobcats, Miley Young won the 800-meters (2:36.13), Lily Gill won the 300-meter hurdles (49.26) and Mackenna Price won the long jump (15-6.5).
Dowagiac’s Owen Saylor was a three-time conference champion as he went back-to-back in the 800- and 1,600-meters with times of 2:07.1 and 4:45.19, respectively. He was also a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay team as he joined Devin Rock, Cameron White and Josh Winchester-Jones to run a time of 3:38.07.
The Chieftains’ Zimerian Jones brought home the other conference title as he won the long jump with a leap of 19-8.5.
Buchanan’s Britain Philip was a multiple winner.
Philip won the 300-meter hurdles (41.34) and was a member of the Bucks’ winning 3,200-meter relay team. That team, which ran a time of 8:51.93, also had Liam McBeth, Jacob Kuntz and Jack Sherwood as members.
For Brandywine, Kevin Roberts and Kaden Santana multiple winners.
Roberts won the pole vault with a height of 12-0, while Santana won the high jump with a height of 5-8. The two then joined up with Elijah Gamble and Kaeden Warfield to win the 400-meter relay with a time of 44.90.
