BUCHANAN — The City of Buchanan is has announced the adoption of the Buchanan Riverfront Master Plan, a comprehensive initiative aimed at revitalizing Buchanan’s public access areas along the St. Joseph River.

The Buchanan Planning Commission unanimously adopted the master plan at their last meeting on May 14th. This transformative project, generously funded by the AEP Foundation and facilitated by Abonmarche Consultants, is set to enhance the community’s connection to the river, promote ecological restoration, and provide inclusive recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

The primary goal of the Riverfront Master Plan is to reestablish Buchanan’s historic connection to the St. Joseph River. Older residents remember a childhood spent walking along the shores of the river fishing and skipping rocks. The Buchanan Riverfront Master Plan is a story of restoration– restoring the community’s historic connection to the river and protecting and enhancing the area’s natural features. By achieving these goals, the city seeks to improve the quality of life for residents and create new economic opportunities through enhanced public amenities creating a mini National Park Experience in small town Buchanan.

The development of the Master Plan was a collaborative effort over the last twelve months, engaging residents, local organizations, and stakeholders through public surveys, design workshops, and review meetings. The city believes the input gathered from the community was invaluable in shaping the final plan, ensuring it aligns with the needs and desires of Buchanan’s residents.

“We are deeply grateful for the insight and thoughtful participation of the citizens of Buchanan to forge this visionary document that will create transformational opportunities and experiences for generations to come on our special bend of the St. Joseph River in Buchanan,” said Mayor Sean Denison.

The Master Plan includes comprehensive strategies for ecological restoration, such as the protection of wetlands and the stabilization of riverbanks using nature-based solutions. These efforts will enhance the habitat for native species and improve the overall health of the river ecosystem. Additionally, the plan emphasizes reconnecting the community with the river through the development of trails, vista areas, and improved pedestrian and ADA access.

Buchanan is committed to being a responsible steward of the land. The Master Plan outlines sustainable practices for managing stormwater, reducing erosion, and maintaining the natural beauty of the riverfront. These efforts reflect the city’s dedication to preserving its natural resources for future generations.

The Riverfront Master Plan has already yielded significant results, including a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to construct an ADA-accessible kayak launch. Additionally, a technical assistance grant from the Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Cities Initiative will support the creation of a detailed restoration plan for the riverfront area.

Denison expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

“This Master Plan represents a pivotal step in Buchanan’s journey to reconnect with our historic roots along the St. Joseph River. The community’s input and the generous support from the AEP Foundation and other partners have been crucial in making this vision a reality. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on our city’s future.”
