Roundup: Dowagiac, Niles pick up non-league sweeps

DOWAGIAC — Avenging a loss from the previous Saturday, host Dowagiac swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Decatur Tuesday.

In other non-league play, host Niles swept Bridgman.

 

Decatur at Dowagiac

The Chieftains, who lost a 3-2 decision to the Raiders Saturday, defeated Decatur 6-3 and 3-2.

In the opener, Dowagiac used a four-run sixth inning to break at 2-2 deadlock.

Kaleb Smith allowed one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Smith helped his own cause at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Chase Frazier also drove in a pair of runs for the Chieftains, who improved to 9-16 with the sweep.

In the nightcap, Jamal Williams grounded out in the bottom of the seventh, but drove in the winning run.

Dowagiac finished with five hits, including a pair of the bat of Frazier, who also drove in two runs.

Cole Wimberley picked up the victory in relief as he came on in the seventh to end the game with a strikeout.

 

Bridgman at Niles

The Vikings improved to 21-8 by defeating the Bees 11-6 and 8-0.

In the opener, Niles scored 11 runs on 15 hits.

Talon Brawley was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Alex Cole, Brenden Olsen, Acie Kirtdoll and Carson Rachels all had two hits. Olsen and Brayden Wiemuth both doubled.

Brian Gonzalez started and earned the victory as he did not allow a run or any hits, while striking out three in two innings of work.

Josh McIntyre pitched the third inning and Bryce Zache worked the final four innings for the Vikings.
