Vikings blank Dowagiac, Cass to win Chieftain Invitational

DOWAGIAC — Visiting Niles did not allow a run in sweeping host Dowagiac and Cassopolis to win the Chieftain Invitational at Dean Hagen Field Saturday.

The Vikings (2-4) blanked the Chieftains 19-0 in five winnings, and then won the championship with a 16-0 win over the Rangers, also in five innings.

Dowagiac (1-5) edged Cassopolis 8-7 in the consolation game to earn its first victory of the 2024 season.

Niles allowed just one hit in the opener against the Chieftains as Brian Gonzalez and Josh McIntyre took to the mound. The duo combined for eight strikeouts.

The Vikings had 11 hits, including a pair of doubles from Brenden Olsen. Brayden Schultz, Bryce Zache and Dane Asmus also doubled for Niles. Olsen finished with three hits and Asmus a pair.

Dowagiac’s lone hit came off the bat of Lamone Moore.

Braeden Gillesby started and took the loss. Jamal Williams and Cole Wimberley also to the hill for the Chieftains.

In the championship game, Logan Olsen tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The Vikings finished the game with 10 hits, including three by Acie Kirtdoll and doubles by Brenden Olsen and Brayden Wiemuth.

Aiden McGrew suffered the loss for the Rangers. Ethan Pflug doubled for one of Cassopolis’ two hits.

In the consolation contest, Dowagiac had 12 hits against the Rangers, including a pair of doubles by Williams and a double by Wimberley. Mason Maggart added a triple.

Kaleb Smith picked up the win with relief help from Wimberley.

Gage Mitchell took the loss. Spencer Wagoner doubled for one of Cassopolis’  seven hits.
