Niles boys remain in first place; girls team still winless

NILES — The Niles boys basketball team remained in first place in the Wolverine Conference as it defeated visiting Vicksburg 88-56 Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, at Vicksburg, the Vikings are still looking for their first win of the season in girls basketball following a 70-30 loss to the Bulldogs.

 

Boys Basketball

A 26-8 start was all Niles needed to improve to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

The Vikings increased their advantage to 30 points (56-26) by halftime and then cruised home to their seventh consecutive victory.

Niles added 32 points to its total in the second half, while Vicksburg (6-5, 3-4 Wolverine) scored 30 points.

Mike Phillips scored a game-high 32 points for the Vikings, who also got 19 points from Brayden Favors and 13 points from Brenden Olsen. Donovyn Williams finished with 11 points.

Jaxson Wilson and Carter Brown both scored 144 points to pace the Bulldogs.

First place in the Wolverine Conference will be on the line tonight night Niles hosts Edwardsburg in a make-up game from last Friday.

The Eddies are currently in second place with a 5-1 record following their 64-59 win over Paw Paw Tuesday night.

 

Girls Basketball

The host Bulldogs scored 44 first-half points en route to their win over the Vikings Tuesday night.

Vicksburg scored 34 of those points in the opening eight minutes as Niles (0-8, 0-5 Wolverine) trailed the Bulldogs 34-14.

Vicksburg (8-1, 5-1 Wolverine) scored just 10 points in the second quarter, but held Niles to three points to take a 44-17 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs doubled up the Vikings, 26-13, in the second half.

Jessica Thornton scored a game-high 21 points to lead Niles. No other Viking scored more than four points.

Makayla Allen scored 18 points to lead Vicksburg.

Niles will host Edwardsburg tonight in a make-up game from last Friday. The Eddies come to town following a 58-53 conference loss Tuesday night.
