Roundup: Wrestling teams compete in weekend tournaments

SOUTH HAVEN — The Dowagiac wrestling team went 2-3 at the South Haven Invitational on Saturday, while Buchanan finished fifth and Brandywine eighth at the Burton Richards Memorial hosted by Eau Claire High School.

Cassopolis placed 15th.

 

South Haven Invitational

The Chieftains split with Reed City, wining 66-18 and losing 51-27. Dowagiac also defeated Hudsonville Unity Christian 54-30, but lost to Bangor 39-36 and the host Rams 49-19.

Going undefeated on the day were Cameron White (138) and Israel Villegas (144).

 

Burton Richards Memorial

Decatur won the team championship with 230 points, while the Bucks finished fifth with 105 points. The Bobcats had 75 points and the Rangers 32 points.

Buchanan and Brandywine both had an individual champion as the Bucks’ Lee Payne decisioned Braeden Birkhead 10-7 at 150 pounds and the Bobcats’ Gavin Schoff pinned Eau Claire’s Aidan Fisher in 1:09 at 165 pounds.

Buchanan’s Holden Carrington (106) and Drew Andersen were (215) were runners-up. Cassopolis’ Brandon Hemminger (113) was also a runnr-up.

 

Girls Wrestling

Brandywine’s Maddison Ward captured another championship as she was 4-0 in winning the 170-pound title at the Parchment Tournament on Saturday.

Buchanan’s Jordan Winslett (100) and Avery Scanlon (145) were sixth-place finishers.
