DOWAGIAC — A couple of Illinois buzz saws handed Dowagiac defeats in the second annual Southwestern Michigan College Tri-State Holiday Classic at the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse Friday night.

The Chieftain girls basketball team lost its first game of the season as Thornton Township High School defeated Dowagiac 53-29 in the opening game of the two-day event.

Thornton (8-2) jumped out to an 18-2 lead after one quarter and went on to the easy victory.

The Chieftains (3-1), which had defeated Benton Harbor the night before in their Lakeland Conference opener, struggled offensively in the first-half. After scoring eight points in the first eight minutes, Dowagiac was held to just three points in the second quarter as Thornton opened up a 27-11 halftime advantage.

Thornton was able to slow down the Chieftains’ offense with the exception of Maggie Weller, who scored a game-high 19 points. Weller will play basketball next season for Southwestern Michigan College.

Marlie Carpenter had six points for Dowagiac. No other player had more than two.

Phalan Sigers, a Western Michigan recruit, had 17 points to lead Thornton. Camryn Edmondson finished with 14 points.

The Chieftains will play their final game before the Christmas break on Thursday as it travels to Coloma for a non-conference contest.

Like the girls game, Dowagiac found itself in a big hole after one quarter.

North Lawndale College Prep opened up a 26-3 lead after eight minutes and never looked back.

The Chieftains settle down after the first quarter played nearly even with Lawndale the rest of the night.

After spotting the Illinois school a 23-point lead, Dowagiac actually outscored Lawndale 39-37 over the final three quarters, including 18-7 in third.

Lamone Moore Jr. had 15 points to lead the Chieftains, who also got nine points from Joshua Winchester-Jones and eight points from Gianni Villalobos and Chase Frazier.

Dowagiac has two games left before the holiday break.

The Chieftains travel to Paw Paw to face former Wolverine Conference foe Paw Paw on Tuesday before hosting Coloma in a non-conference contest on Thursday.
