Roundup: Bucks, Vikings claim titles; Dowagiac 3-2 at Vicksburg

COLOMA — Female wrestlers from Buchanan and Niles both brought home championships from the Coloma Tournament on Saturday.

The Bucks’ Jordan Winslett won the 105-pound crown, while the Vikings’ Jazmin Sosa was the 155-pound champion.

In all, wrestlers from Buchanan, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg and Niles had 11 placers.

Finishing second were Dowagiac’s Cinthia Villegas (135), Edwardsburg’s Annika Vanburen (100), Niles’ Maya First (140) and Niles’ Aubrea Smith (190). Placing third were Dowagiac’s Shakyla Wesaw (130) and Niles’ Layla McCrory (155).

Finishing fourth were Buchanan’s Avery Scanlon (155), Makenna Chadderdon (235), and Niles’ Kate Gonzalez (130).

 

Boys Wrestling

Dowagiac and Brandywine both competed at the annual Vicksburg Invitational on Saturday.

The Chieftains went 3-2, while the Bobcats were 0-5.

Dowagiac defeated Berrien Springs 54-24, Coloma 44-33 and Three Rivers 54-25. The Chieftains lost to Martin 46-36 and host Vicksburg 51-24.

Going 5-0- on the day for the Chieftains were Israel Villegas (144) and Cal Chapman (285). Hayden Groth was 2-0.

Going undefeated for the Bobcats were Kaiden Rieth (132) and Gavin Schoff (165).

At the Southwest Classic hosted by Allegan, Edwardsburg and Niles placed 11th and 16th, respectively.

Caden Manfred finished third for the Eddies at 126, while Taurin Zimpleman and Keegan Parsons both finished fourth at 132 and 138. Braden Lundgren was fifth at 144-pounds.

The Vikings had just one placer as Chase Brawley was sixth at 285.

Niles and Dowagiac will square off in the Blue & Black Rivalry on the mat at Southwestern Michigan College Wednesday night.

Brandywine will travel to Bronson for a quad, while Edwardsburg is off until Saturday when it competes in the Northwood Invitational.
