Roadrunners rebound with back-to-back wins

DOWAGIAC — The Southwestern Michigan College women’s basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season to pick up a pair of victories.

The Roadrunners (10-1) defeated the College of DuPage 61-49 last Thursday night, and then routed Andrews University for the second time in December, 97-30, on Saturday night.

Southwestern Michigan used a 23-point third quarter to break open a close contest against the Chaparrals. The Roadrunners led 32-26 at halftime, but exploded in the quarter to open up a 55-37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Cameron Thomas (Hazel Crest, Illinois) led SMC with 17 points, while Arianna Lemons (Michigan City) came off the bench to score 12 points. Lemons also had si rebounds and a pair of steals.

Nalani Williams (St. Louis, Missouri) finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Niles’ Amari Palmer also had eight points and 10 rebounds to go along with four steals.

Against Andrews University, the Roadrunners raced out to a 26-1 lead and never looked back.

Thomas has 29 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists to lead SMC, which also got 17 points and five rebounds from Lemons. Williams finished with 14 points and a career-high 21 rebounds. She also had six steals and three assists. Palmer finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Khashya McCoy (Hartford) added 10 points. Dowagiac’s Alanah Smith finished with eight points, 15 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

The Roadrunners are back on the court Dec. 20 when they host No. 3-ranked (Division III) Owens Community College in its final game of 2023.
