Roadrunners pick up pair of titles at Art Kraft Invitational

RIVER GROVE, Ill. — The Southwestern Michigan College wrestling team competed in the Art Kraft Invitational and brought home a pair of championships on Saturday.

The Roadrunners, ranked No. 14 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll, had six placers overall.

Winning championships for SMC were Nathan Andrina (Edwardsburg) at 184 pounds and Shane Edwards (Battle Creek/Pennfield) at 285 pounds.

Finishing second was Dowagiac’s Jordan Simpson (125), while Hunter Heath (Niles/Brandywine) was third, Zam Thompson (Eaton Rapids/Lakeshore) was fourth and Caeleb Ishmael (Coloma) was fifth.

Andrina, a freshman, was 5-0 on the day. He defeated Triton Colege’s Bennett Eichert 7-2 in the championship match.

Edwards, a sophomore, was 4-0. He won by injury default over Indian Hill Community College’s Treyshawn White in the title match.

Simpson, a sophomore, was 4-1, falling to Indian Hill’s Isaac Gibbs 7-3 in the championship finals.

Heath, a sophomore, pinned Manchester’s Connor Watts in 4:18 in the consolation finals to end the day at 4-1.

The Roadrunners are back on the mat on Saturday as they head to Muskegon Community College to defend their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Duals championship.
