Niles wins Trojan Baker Bash for third straight year

BRONSON — For the third consecutive year, the Niles boys bowling team captured the Trojan Baker Bash hosted by Sturgis at the Strike Zone.

The Vikings had to roll 12 qualifying games to decide the top four teams that would advance to the championship round.

Niles finished third with 1,878 pins. Host Sturgis was first with 1,911 pins and Portage Central second with 1,878. Battle Creek Pennfield was the fourth seed after finishing with 1,841 pins.

As the No. 3 seed, the Vikings faced No. 2 seed Portage Central in the semifinals, where Niles defeated the Mustangs 326-311. The Trojans defeated Pennfield 325-313 in the other semifinal to advance to the championship match.

In the final round, the Vikings defeated the Trojans 348-303 to capture the championship once again. Battle Creek defeated Portage Central 419-295 in the consolation finals.

The Niles team consisted of Brad Archer, Hunter Kater, Aiden Kidwell, Gavin Dandurand, Adam Jackson, Shawn Atkins and Tryvon Wylie. The team was coached by Grant Gourley.

The Niles girls bowling team finished eighth with a total of 1,263 pins and did not advance to the final four.

Sturgis, Bronson, Coloma and Coldwater advanced to the semifinals after the 12 qualifying games.

Coldwater won the tournament as it defeated Coloma 269-241.

Niles hosts Otsego at Joey Armadillo’s on Wednesday in a Wolverine Conference match.
