Roundup: Dowagiac, Brandywine open season with easy wins

DOWAGIAC — Host Dowagiac and visiting Brandywine opened up their 2023-24 girls basketball seasons with easy victories Monday night.

The Chieftains rolled to a 40-19 win over River Valley, while the Bobcats defeated host Sturgis 53-28.

 

River Valley at Dowagiac

Maggie Weller led a balanced Dowagiac scoring attack with 14 points as the Chieftains outscored the Mustangs 12-0 in the opening quarter en route to the victory.

Dowagiac (1-0) also got 13 points from Marlie Carpenter and nine points from Audrey Johnson.

The Chieftains led 22-8 at halftime and 33-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Chieftains will host Cassopolis in a non-conference contest Tuesday night.

 

Brandywine at Sturgis

Ellie Knapp scored a game-high 23 points as the Bobcats grabbed the early 16-10 lead.

Brandywine (1-0) led 25-16 at halftime and then held Sturgis to four points in the third quarter to break the game open.

Besides Knapp, the Bobcats also got 10 points from Miley Young and nine points from Adeline Gill.

Keyanna O’Tey had eight points to lead the Trojans.

Brandywine will host Berrien Springs in its Lakeland Conference opener on Friday.
