Cass County finance department receives highest rating from national organization

CASS COUNTY — Cass County’s finance department was recognized Friday for outstanding performance in the recently concluded fiscal year.  

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Cass County for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2022.  

According to a press release from GFOA, “the report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.”

The Cass County Finance Department is led by Finance Director Jennifer Rentfrow, of Edwardsburg. James Tito Jr. is the deputy finance director. 

“Receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association is an immensely gratifying and significant milestone for our county’s finance team,” Rentfrow said. “This recognition signifies our unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in financial management. This award is a true testament to the dedication and hard work put in by our team throughout the fiscal year. 

“Ultimately, this award is a source of pride for our team, a testament to our professionalism, and a reminder of the importance of our role in serving the public interest by maintaining the highest standards of financial reporting and management,” she said. “It motivates us to continue striving for excellence in the years to come.” 

Rentfrow said she would like to thank Tito and County Administrator Matthew Newton for their invaluable contributions that led to this achievement. 

“Furthermore, the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement presented to me personally is a humbling acknowledgment of our team’s leadership and management contributions in achieving this recognition,” she said.  

Administrator Newton said the award is a testament to County’s commitment to its residents.  

“The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and illustrates Jennifer’s commitment to transparency and attention to detail,” he said. “The community can take pride in knowing that the County continues to maintain our high standard of excellence with respect to accurate, reliable, and detailed financial reporting.”
