MILTON TOWNSHIP — A 16-year-old Niles driver injured one person and damaged three vehicles by failing to stop at a stop sign.

Around 6 p.m. Monday, law enforcement was called to investigate a vehicle crash on Redfield Street and Fir Road in Milton Township.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies learned that Shannon Ruth Schalk, 25, of Niles, was attempted to turn south on Fir Road from Redfield Street. As she turned, the 16-year-old, heading east on Redfield, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into Schalk.

This caused Schalk’s vehicle to spin and crash into a vehicle driven by Kimberly Joy Evans, 60, of Granger, who had stopped.

Behnke said Schalk had minor injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. The 16-year-old and Evans were checked and cleared by Southwest Michigan Community Ambulance Service staff.

All occupants were wearing seatbelts, Behnke said.
