DOWAGIAC — Internet safety and sending inappropriate images over social media has become one of the top 10 concerns for both parents and schools to address, according to a 2015 report from the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

To assist Dowagiac schools with educating students and providing them with a better awareness as to the seriousness of these issues, school officials have reached out to Michigan State Police for help.

This month, Dowagiac Middle School will teach students about internet safety at three different hour-long seminars. Sixth graders will attend the program this Wednesday. Seventh graders will participate on Feb. 12, while eighth graders will participate Feb. 19.

MSP has developed an internet safety awareness program that highlights the consequences and fallout that can ensue as a result of unsafe online behavior. Their presentation has been reviewed by both district and building administration for age appropriateness and content.

Parents who would like to opt to not have their child participate in this presentation should contact the office at (269) 782-4440. School officials will then provide students with an alternate educational setting.
