NILES — Brandywine Community Schools students will be able to sing, dance and act with performers across the globe February.

The Young Americans, a nonprofit performance organization, will host workshops and a performance with participating students Feb. 9 to 11 as part of its spring Midwest tour.

Registration is open to third to 12th-grade Brandywine students, and no prior performing experience is necessary.

More details about the workshop can be found at youngamericans.org/us or by contacting August Garritano, agarritano@brandywinebobcats.org. Garritano, a teacher who directs Performing Arts Workshops, is a alumnus of The Young Americans.

The cost is $59 per student and includes a tour t-shirt. During registration, scholarships that cover the cost of participating are available.

Registration can be completed at youngamericans.org/Registration, brandywinebobcats.org/apps/news or by stopping by a Brandywine school.

The final performance begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Brandywine Junior/Senior High School, 1700 Bell Road, and is open to the public. Tickets will be available at the door. They are $10 for adults and $8 for students.

The Young Americans is committed to inspiring the world through global performing arts workshops and world-class performances for audiences of all ages, said staff. The organization devotes its tour to teaching and empowering students and supporting school music programs across the U.S. and Canada.

“Music is a universal language, and because we use music as our main tool, our programs are successful in every region that we visit,” said Bill Brawley, chief artistic officer of The Young Americans. “There is nothing greater than watching a community come together and work as a team in a matter of days. Not only do the students learn how to sing and dance, they also develop new friendships, improve self-esteem and find acceptance among their peers.”

Founded in 1962 as a choral group, The Young Americans now focuses on providing all students — regardless of language, socioeconomic background or experience level — with opportunities to experience quality music education.

“We are honored to be hosting this workshop,” said Brandywine staff. “This is our first time having them. Let’s give them a huge Bobcat welcome.”

Each 40-member, college-aged cast tours worldwide, visiting a new community or school every three days.

At Brandywine’s tour stop, the cast teaches three-day performing arts workshops, which include classes in singing, dancing, and performance. On Sunday, students will workshop from 1:30 to 9 p.m. On Monday, they will workshop from 3 to 9 p.m.

On Tuesday, a two-hour performance is performed at 7 p.m. after students arrive at 3:15 p.m. for a final workshop. Students perform alongside The Young Americans and as soloists, ensemble members and dancers.

To make the workshop a reality, The Young Americans staff said host families for the nonprofit’s performers are still needed. Prospective hosts can call Brandywine Community Schools at (269) 683-4800 for more information.

Before The Young Americans come to Brandywine, they will make a stop at Cassopolis Public Schools Jan. 26 to 28.
