NILES — The following people were appointed and reappointed to city boards, commissions and committees in one unanimous motion by Niles City Council Monday at the Niles Fire Station Complex, 1345 E. Main St.

The following information was taken from written applications each person submitted to the council. The council then used this information to help determine their vote.

Tiffani Dash was reappointed to a three-year term on the Niles Public Arts Commission. She has served on the board since March 2019.

She said that the commission has many ideas but not enough people and time to see them through. She said once projects set forth last year are completed and community awareness is raised about the commission, more work can be done.

Mary Drolet was reappointed to a three-year term on the Niles Historic District Commission. She has served on the commission since 2013.

She cited a more consistent application of standards and guidelines as an improvement the commission could make.

In his application, Hassinger stated he has used his engineering experience to become a “short list” volunteer of the archeological project at Fort St. Joseph, especially when it came to dewatering the floodplain.

He is currently helping update displays at the Niles History Center and plans to sand and refinish the flooring he worked at Chapin Mansion.

He previously helped construct the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum.

She possesses two bachelor’s degrees, one in business administration, the other in community recreation.

Betty Knoll was reappointed to a three-year term on the Niles Public Arts Commission. She has served on the board since 2014.

She said finding more volunteers is necessary to grow the commission’s impact. She also said talking to residents in person can be more effective than over the phone or in front of city council.

Rhonda Harlow was appointed to a three-year term on the parks and recreation board.

She is employed at Spectrum Health Lakeland, 1234 Napier Ave., St. Joseph. She currently works in trauma services and provides injury prevention education to communities. She previously was a case manager for hospital quality improvement efforts and a bedside nurse.

She was previously an active member of Psi Iota Xi service organization, a volunteer at Niles Scream Park and an official for the Mariners, the Niles-Buchanan YMCA’s swim team.
