NILES — A Niles woman who hit her neighbor over the head with a hammer while pregnant and high on cocaine was sentenced by Berrien County Trial Court Judge Arthur Cotter Monday at the Niles courthouse, 1205 Front St.

Sigourney Loretta Broyles, 22, of N. Fifth St., was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 52 days already served. Following her jail sentence, she will serve 90 days on a Michigan Department of Corrections tether, pay $1,198 in fines and serve two years of probation, which includes an anger management class.

She was also sentenced for a misdemeanor, larceny less than $200, and served 111 days in jail, with 111 days served.

On Sept. 3, Niles police officers were dispatched to the Arbor Trails Apartments to find a woman bleeding from the head, her neighbors performing first aid on her.

The victim recounted the scene in court to Cotter. Broyles, whom she had minimal interactions with, approached her that day saying the victim’s car was being broken into.

When the victim found no such act, she returned to find Broyles still near her apartment. When the victim tried to leave, Broyles followed, hitting her in the head with a hammer.

At the time, Broyles was pregnant, so the victim said she was at first hesitant to fight back hard. So, she began screaming for help.

The victim said if it had not been for two of her neighbors, who were present at court Monday, she would have been struck again.

They “saved her life,” the victim said.

Cotter said he was in disbelief that Broyles would not only attack someone but do so while high on cocaine and while pregnant

“This was a really, really serious crime,” Cotter said to Broyles before passing sentence. “She’s lucky she fended you off.”

Broyles will not be able to live at Arbor Trails Apartments as part of her probation.

Her two-month-old son is currently with Broyles’ godmother.

Before Broyles’ sentencing, the following men were sentenced by Cotter:

Lee Benjamin Sharrer received his 34th conviction when Cotter sentenced him to 16 to 60 months in jail, with 99 days already served, for his third domestic violence offense on his third victim.

The 37-year-old Superior Street resident, of Niles, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house Sept. 15 to visit her and her roommate, Sharrer’s friend.

Sharrer soon slapped his ex-girlfriend, causing her to fall. When her roommate told him to leave, Sharrer punched him in the face, causing him to fall down the stairs. A third person was shoved before Sharrer left the house.

After reading about half of Sharrer’s convictions, Cotter called the defendant’s most recent act “completely uncalled for” and saw no grounds to lessen his sentence.

Divine Malachi Heard, 18, of South Bend, will serve 120 days in jail, with 57 days already served; pay $1,198 in fines and serve two years of probation in his home state of Indiana for stealing a vehicle.

At 1:55 a.m. at Walgreens, 907 S. 11th St., Niles, video surveillance captured Heard getting into another man’s vehicle, who was in the store, and driving off.

Heard and three other young adults he was originally with, returned around 4:30 a.m.

According to a police report, Divine initially denied stealing a vehicle, but two other passengers confirmed he did.

After serving his jail sentence, Heard will be sent to St. Joseph County, Indiana’s court, where he faces charges of methamphetamine use and theft.

All stolen material was recovered.

Michael Lorimer Starrett, 23, of Hickory Street in Niles, was sentenced to 270 days in jail and $198 in fines for stealing a motor vehicle Oct. 28 while on parole.

The vehicle Starrett operated was reported stolen the day prior. It was purchased by the father of a passenger of Starrett’s.

Starrett previously served concurrent jail and prison sentences for carrying a concealed weapon, second-offense domestic assault and operating a vehicle while high on marijuana.
