Athlete Showcase: Niles’ Bailey Bickel

Bailey Bickel is a junior on the Niles girls basketball team.

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

BB: In softball, I have a diving catch in the outfield, which I then threw into home to get two outs to win.

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

BB: One of my biggest disappointments is when we give it our all, but still lose.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

BB: My hero would have to be my great-grandma, because no matter how bad she gets, she still is so independent and wants to get it done.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

BB: When the opposing team starts to come back.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

BB: I was stealing second base in softball, and my legs gave out, making me fall on my face.

How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?

BB: I normally run or shoot some basketballs, but I also ride the Peloton bike.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

BB: f I were not playing basketball, volleyball or softball, I would play soccer.

Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?

BB: For me, sports are an outlet for my high school stress.

How would you give away $50,000?

BB: I would want to give it to something or someone that would help the environment.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

BB: I would want to be the head coach of the UCLA softball team.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

BB: If I didn’t do sports, I would most likely get involved in more school plays.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

BB: The most challenging thing for me is to “get out of my head.”

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

BB: I don’t think I would change any rule.

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

BB: The scariest thing I had to do was going to Andrews when they were a quarter in. I am so glad I pushed myself to do it.

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

BB: I saw a woman run into a forest fire to save a koala on fire.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

BB: My favorite hobby would be reading, because it takes me to new places.
