NILES — Last week, Niles High School gave $3,908 to two area charities supporting those with cancer, a culmination of a month’s worth of fundraising efforts.

The Brian Parker Memorial Foundation and Hope Grows each received $1,954 Wednesday, Dec. 3 and Thursday, Dec. 4, respectively. Representatives from each organization came to Niles High School to receive the check from and take pictures with students and staff.

Hope Grows raises money to support YMCA programs for cancer recovery and support services. Over its six years, it has raised $190,000.

The Brian Parker Memorial Foundation, based in Niles, provides educational materials, research grants and monetary support to those with cancer.

The money raised was in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Among the fundraising activities was a donation competition between classes that ninth graders won — a Mad Dash for Cash, where raffle baskets were given away at a Pink Out home football game. There was also Pink Week, where more than 500 students paid $1 to walk the high school track for over an hour in symbolic support of those with cancer.

Other activities included selling baked goods and pink items, the color symbolizing the fight against breast cancer.

The following organizations, clubs and businesses also supported the cause, sponsoring raffle baskets at the Pink Out football game: the Brawley family, National Honor Society, Student Council, NHS Yearbook, Niles FFA, Tans Down Under, Swirlyz, Pizza Transit, YMCA, Milano’s, Wings Etc., Ally Sowers-Rana’s, Custom Computer Company, Tylers’ Automotive, Pete’s Patio, Tanya Hagen-Norwex and Fuller Studio.
