CULTON: Everyone is a kid on Halloween

Tomorrow, little ghosts, ghouls, princesses and action heroes will be roaming the streets of southwest Michigan.

That’s right, the year’s third-best holiday (after Christmas and Thanksgiving, of course) is finally here, and children all across the region will be spending Halloween trick or treating, bouncing from house to house to collect the best and most candy.

I loved Halloween growing up. I was always so proud of my princess costume (and I was almost always a princess) that I would refuse to put a coat over it, no matter how cold it was — much to my parents’ annoyance. I took great delight in scouting out the houses that gave out fun-sized candy bars and making trades (a Milk Duds for a Butterfinger or a Mike and Ike for a Smarties) with my sister once we got home.

Even though that was years ago and now I am far too old to trick or treat, Halloween still holds a special place in my heart. Something about the holiday is full of so much fun. Halloween is one of the few days a year you can be truly silly, dress up and be whoever you want. Otherwise put, it’s one of the few days a year as an adult that you can be a kid.

I believe many working adults don’t get enough time to act like kids. We should take some time to leave our worries at the door. So, this Halloween, whether you are going to a party or taking the kids out to trick or treat, enjoy yourself the way you would have when you were a kid. Wear a costume without worrying about what you look like. Eat a candy bar or two. Be silly. Be excited. Be enthusiastic, and take the time to feel like a child again, because come Friday, it is back to work and back to adult responsibilities.
