ALLENDALE — For the first time in school history, the Dowagiac girls golf team sent a player to the state finals.

Senior Greta Whitaker competed against the best in the state on Friday and Saturday at The Meadows on the campus of Grand Valley State University.

Whitaker shot 98 on the opening day and 91 on day two as she finished with a 189, which tied her for 12th among individual qualifiers.

“She hit the ball well, but her nerves on the putting green cost her,” said Dowagiac coach Bob Turner after the first day. “Tomorrow will be better.”

Bloomfield Hills Marian won the state title with a two-day total of 689. Flint Powers Catholic was second with a 692.

Shannon Kennedy, of Marian, captured medalist honors as she shot 143.
