NILES — The Niles Buchanan YMCA is back to normal operations following a brief evacuation Friday morning.
According to Niles Police Chief Jim Millin, the Niles Police Department was called to the Niles Buchanan YMCA, 905 North Front St., Niles, before 7 a.m. Friday morning after a suspicious package was reported outside of the facility. The building was evacuated, and the bomb squad was called to investigate. The package was determined not to be a threat, and the YMCA returned to normal operations by 8:40 a.m.
“The police were called just as a precaution,” said YMCA Marketing Coordinator Kayla Foster. “The Y does value the safety of our staff and our guests above all else. We took what we thought were necessary precautions to ensure that everyone was safe. Thank you to our first responders who came and handled the situation.”
Chief Millin said that if any resident comes across a suspicious package, they should call the police.
