ST. JOSEPH — A celebration in a “cemetery” is coming to southwest Michigan.

The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center will co-host a community cultural event, Celebrandoel Dia de los Muertos, at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, 601 Main St. in St. Joseph.

El Dia de los Muertos, known as Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday honoring and celebrating family members who have died.  The Friday, Nov. 1 event will include a wide range of entertainment options including authentic Mexican cuisine, specialty beverages, a live mariachi band music, dancing, fresh pressed cider and more.

Following the Mexican custom, an on-site “cemetery” will be included. Organizers are asking celebrants to bring photos of loved ones who have passed on to display at the “cemetery” and reflect on the memories that made them special. The event is family friendly with entertainment options for children that include crafts, face painting and a screening of Disney movie, “Coco.”

Tickets are $25 for adults ($30 at the door) and $5 for children 5 to 12. A cash bar will be available. Tickets are available online at smso.org, or by calling the SMSO at (269) 982-4030 or The Heritage Museum at (269) 983-1191.
