DOWAGIAC — After being located in downtown Dowagiac for more than 15 years, The Mane Attraction Inc. has officially transitioned to a new space down the road.

The hair salon moved to its new location, 56332 M-51 South, earlier this month.

Acquiring the new space for the salon just kind of happened, said salon owner Jimijune Fryman.

“Me and my husband were driving down the road by this place and he was like, ‘I think it’s for sale,’” Fryman said. “We stopped in and it was just perfect.”

Fryman got her start at The Mane Attraction Inc. under former owner Cherie Bradford. When Bradford was ready to sell the salon, Fryman decided to purchase it 15 years ago.

On July 29, Fryman announced the salon’s move, saying she needed to change things up a bit.

“We bought this,” Fryman said. “It’s just more relaxing, homier and that’s what we wanted for our clients.”

Fryman was leasing her space in downtown Dowagiac and now owns the salon’s current residence, which previously was a family practice and required some renovations.

“We gutted this whole place out and redid everything,” Fryman said. “There were three different small rooms and then we tore all the rooms down and then just made a breakroom.”

With the salon’s new move, Fryman also decided to add new services. Soon, the salon will be offering micro blading and facials.

In July, the salon also hired a nail technician, Miranda Wright, and now offers pedicures and manicures in their new space.

“We just wanted to offer a little bit more for our clients,” Fryman said.

Currently, the staff has five stylists, one nail tech and a makeup artist. Fryman’s own daughter, Meghan Kline, works at the salon and followed in her mother’s footsteps to be a hair stylist.

Fryman has had a long career of cutting hair, after obtaining her cosmetologist license when she was 20 years old.

“I started doing hair right out of high school,” Fryman said. “I have always had a passion for hair. I was always doing my girlfriends’ hair in high school.”

Now that the salon has a new location and is expanding its services, the salon’s goal is to keep growing and adding more services. In addition to its regular clientele, The Mane Attraction Inc. stays busy throughout the year doing hair and makeup for weddings and other special occasions, including makeup and hair tips for Miss Dowagiac Juliana Stranger and her court of honor.

Being in the heart of Dowagiac, the salon attracts clients from the city but also Niles, Berrien Springs, South Bend and Chicago. The salon also services clients in the Sister Lakes area.

“We really want to thank our clients. Without them, this wouldn’t have [been] happening,” Fryman said. “Now we own [this salon] and it’s all because of our great clients.”
