BUCHANAN — With the regular season winding down and some of the biggest meets of the year ahead, Edwardsburg and Niles were able to grab some momentum by winning the boys and girls RedBud Invitational team titles on Saturday.

HighThe Eddies, led by individual champion Jack Leman, edged runner-up Coloma 39-43 to claim the boys team title.

Leman ran a time of 17:38 to defeat Niles’ Adam Shepherd, who posted a time of 17:45.

The Eddies also had Danny Guarino, Killian Marshall and Will Leman crack the top 10.

Buchanan’s Walker Barz finished second, and teammate Kelsey Brown fourth.

“It was a great day for the Eddies,” said Edwardsburg coach Beth Gunn. “Five of my runners set season records at Redbud, which is a challenging course. It should be a big confidence booster for the team knowing they were very competitive on such a tough course. It was also still pretty hot and humid in spite of an earlier than normal start time. I was impressed with many gutty individual performances on Saturday.”

Niles’ Kaylee Thompson, who has been battling illness, was strong enough to dominate the field at the famous motocross course on Saturday as she won with a time of 21:26.

Niles finished with 29 points to easily outdistance runner-up Coloma, which finished with 40 points. Edwardsburg was third and Buchanan fourth.

Thompson bested teammate Kayla Trueblood, who was second with a time of 23:08.

Anna Cleveland led the Eddies with a fourth-place finish and a time of 23:39. Brandywine’s Allison Lauri finished seventh and Buchanan’s Natalie Riley ninth.

The Vikings finished with four runners in the top 10.

“The RedBud course is a very challenging course, so I think it helped give my team some confidence leading into the remainder of the season,” said Niles coach Jami Foster. “We have some great talent and have yet to see that talent shine as a team until this past weekend. The girls are looking forward to the county meet and hope to place high.”

Niles, Buchanan and Brandywine will all compete in the Berrien County Meet on Saturday. That meet has been moved to Lake Michigan College due to the recent outbreak of Eastern equine encephalitis.
