PAQUETTE: Remembering at the Capitol

Published 8:26 am Monday, September 16, 2019

Last week, the Michigan House of Representatives played host to first responders as we remembered the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Each legislator was able to host two guests, and I was honored to have Sheriff Paul Bailey from Berrien County and Chief Larry Lamb from the Niles City Fire Department join me for the service. Since it was my first service at the Capitol, I didn’t know what to expect. During the ceremony at the Michigan House of Representatives, the legislature honored all of Michigan’s fallen first responders from the past year. I was able to talk to first responders from across the state of Michigan and listen to them tell their incredible and heroic stories.

After session at the Capitol, I drove home and was privileged to participate in the Patriots Day service in Buchanan. There, I once again joined Sheriff Bailey and our local first responders in remembering the sacrifices of their colleagues. It was a heartwarming ceremony to be a part of as the city came together to remember, just like how our country came together in the aftermath of the attacks.

It was truly a humbling experience and I am thankful I was able to recognize those that dutifully serve our community in the 78th district. However, this recognition should not only last for one day. As our first responders provide constant service, not limited to holidays and weekends, so too should our thankfulness. With that in mind, I would like to continue to honor southwest Michigan’s first responders by providing them with the special recognition they deserve. If you know of a first responder that is especially deserving of recognition, please reach out to my office at (517) 373-1796 or via e-mail at BradPaquette@house.mi.gov. We would be honored to recognize and thank them for their service.

Thank you to all our first responders and God bless.

Brad Paquette, R. represents the 78th District, which covers Berrien county.
