CULTON: Thank you to our first responders

Though nearly two decades have passed since 9/11, today is still a sad day.

Today is the anniversary of the national tragedy that took the lives of 2,977 victims on Sept. 11, 2001, following a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.

For many, today is a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives that day 18 years ago. It is a day that we mourn their loss — both the lives they led and the potential their lives had for the future.

Of those victims who lost their lives on 9/11, 412 were emergency workers and first responders. Today, we should both remember them and be thankful for the service they provided. Without them, who knows how much higher the victim count could have been?

They performed a great duty that day, and their sacrifices should not be forgotten.

I would also like to take today to thank all of our current first responders who still put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. I believe this is a great way to honor the officers that lost their lives 18 years ago.

What happened on 9/11 is a stark reminder of everything first responders put on the line when they answer a call. Often, the full details of what they are walking into are unknown. Many first responders carry the weight of knowing that every call they answer carries risks, knowing that they may be hurt in the process. However, they respond anyway, knowing it is their duty.

Particularly with our fire departments, these first responders are often volunteers, who receive little compensation other than knowing they are helping keep our communities safe. They give their time and sweat to us. The least we can do is let them know that we appreciate their work and tell them how much their community needs them.

So, today, I hope you take a moment to remember the victims of 9/11 and to thank a current emergency responder.
