EDWARDSBURG — The miles are beginning to add up this summer for Edwardsburg cross country and track standout Jack Leman.

But it has taken some time.

Leman came down with mononucleosis in February and did not fully recover until July.

During all that time, the All-Wolverine Conference performer would have been racking up the miles in preparation for the upcoming high school year, which begins two weeks from Wednesday with preseason practice.

Leman did a little cross-training on Saturday as he participated in, and finished 12th overall, in the Eagle Lake Triathlon.

Christopher Fruehwirth of Granger, Indiana, picked up another victory in the individual short sprint with a time of 38:01. Leman posted a time of 44:49. Jayson Pestow, of Bristol, Indiana, finished second with a time of 39:08, while Sam Jager, of Stevensville, finished third with a 40:09.

But it was not about the time or where he finished the swim, bike ride and run. It was about doing some cross-training and getting in the miles before his senior season gets under way.

“I have been doing a couple of these,” Leman said. “Just something a little extra to get ready before the senior season.”

This is the second time Leman has competed in the Eagle Lake Triathlon. He also competed four years ago. The race moved from Eagle Lake Marina to Stacy’s Restaurant this season. Leman liked the change.

“I enjoyed it,” he said. “I personally felt I did really good on the swim, and I am not a huge swimmer, but I came out in a good spot. Then I got caught up in the bikes, and that is hard. I tried to hammer down one more time on the run. I felt good.”

Wearing his Edwardsburg jersey, Leman posted a time of 6:54.76. He then completed the bike course in 28:43 before finishing up with the run in a time of 8:25.85.

Leman is now ready to face the challenges of the high school season.

“I am about six behind everybody,” he said. “I got mono back in February and just got over it just before July, so I am getting into the groove. I am catching up, and I think I am going to be ready to go.”

Emily Fruehwirth also picked up another victory as she won the short sprint with a time of 44:56. Rebecca Johnson, of Elkhart, Indiana, finished second with a 47:52, while Niles’ Mary Nagy was third with a time of 48:02.

In the Long Sprint Division, Niles’ Curtis Harris was the overall winner with a time of 1:33:38. He finished the swim with a time of 7:33, the bike course in 46:30 and the run in 37:29.

Aaron Lacava, of Mishawaka, Indiana, was second with a 1:34:51 and Jim Gates, of Granger, Indiana, was third with a time of 1:37:35.

Heather Schuh, of Edwardsburg, was the women’s winner with a time of 1:40:49. She completed the swim in 13:46, the bike course in 45:13 and the run in 40:32.

Kelly Essler, of Johnson City, Tennessee, was second with a time of 1:44:28. Sarah Cira, of Granger, was third with a 1:51:22.
