NILES — Wayne Hahn and Terry Churchill needed one extra hole to decide the Niles City Golf Tournament’s Senior Division championship at Plym Park Sunday afternoon.

Hahn, from Union Pier, Michigan, thought his chances of winning his first city title were done as he and Churchill reached the 18th hole.

Churchill had a two-stroke lead, but hit the ball in the water to open the door for Hahn, who pared the final hole while Churchill had a double-bogey to deadlock the pair at 152 through 36 holes.

The playoff began and ended on the first hole with Hahn making birdie.

“Being two down, I did not expect him (Churchill) to make worse than a five and I would have had to make an eagle, which I did not,” Hahn said.

On the final hole, Hahn had an eagle putt that he left approximately four feet short. He made his birdie putt.

“He lipped out,” Hahn said. “If he makes that putt he wins.”

In the playoff, Hahn hit it on the green and two-putted for the victory after Churchill ended up in the bunker.

Fred Knutel won the Super Seniors, while Mary Jane Lorance won the Women’s championship

The second and final weekend of the Niles City Golf Tournament will begin Saturday morning with the Championship, A, B and C flight titles being up for grabs at Plym Park.

Deadline for entry is noon Wednesday.
