NILES — Despite losing multiple trees during Wednesday night’s severe thunderstorm, the Niles City Golf Tournament will begin today as scheduled.

The crew at Plym Park Golf Course began cleanup operations early Thursday morning and had three of the four downed trees cleared by early afternoon. Smaller branches of a pine tree were expected to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

The City Golf Tournament began at 8 a.m. Friday with the Junior Division. Just three golfers signed up for the tournament. They are Shelby Jaynes, Jaedan Waggoner and Noah Fletcher.

The Women’s Division will tee off at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The field of eight women includes defending champion Mary Jane Lorenz and two-time champion Cathy Daniels.

Lorenz rallied from a nine-shot deficit entering the second day of competition to unseat defending champion Daniels.

The Super Seniors will also tee off at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

A total of four players, ages 71 and older, are registered. They are Jerry Marlin, Bob Grenier, Fred Knutel and Jim Vidt.

A total of 20 golfers, ages 60 to 70, signed up for the Senior Division, including defending champion Paul Krause.

Krause defeated David Hinegardner, who is also in the field, by seven shots.
