BERRIEN TOWNSHIP – About 100 golfers hit the links and contributed to youth scholarships for a Buchanan High School and a Niles High School graduate last Saturday.

The 10th annual Jason Arnold Memorial Golf Outing at Brookwood Golf Course in Berrien Township raised about $2,000 from the time its golf group teed off in the morning to when the last group putted in on hole 18 late in the afternoon for two scholarships.

The money raised was divided in half, $1,000 for BHS graduate Megan Adkerson, and the other $1,000 for NHS graduate Alexis Stump.

The scholarships are meant to remember Jason Arnold, said his parents, Freida and Dale Arnold.

Jason was a 1979 NHS graduate and an all-state athlete. After attending Albion College, he became a special education teacher, a basketball coach and a soccer coach. Jason died in 2010 from a fall while repairing a Niles church’s roof.

“We are really grateful for his friends and supporters,” Freida said. “It means a lot to us that people remember Jason for these reasons.”
