EDITORIAL: Congratulations, southwest Michigan

Last week, United Way of Southwest Michigan led a Day of Action in which businesses and individuals from all over the region channeled their Christmas spirit — in June.

During the event, more than 20,000 pantry items were collected to stock shelves throughout Berrien and Cass counties.

We wish to congratulate all involved for these astounding efforts, which will hopefully keep pantries — and bellies — full throughout the summer months.

Unfortunately, for too many southwest Michigan children, with summer break comes the end of daily meals. Parents already struggling to feed their children are responsible for triple the amount of food they are responsible for during the school year, when children can typically get free breakfast and lunch at school.

During the winter months, southwest Michigan residents are extremely generous. In the holiday spirit, many donate their time, money, food and other supplies to those less fortunate.

While we never expected that our neighbors were less generous during the warmer months, we understand that all families are under the same strain once their children are home for the summer — preparing more meals, paying for childcare and expensing family time and extra curriculars.

The efforts led by United Way last week proved that in spite of this strain, countless southwest Michigan residents found a way to stretch their hard earned dollars and help those less fortunate.

We appreciate the United Way for recognizing this need and leading this charge, and are proud to say we are part of a community that feels the holiday spirit all year round.
