EDITORIAL: Choose the next Dowagiac superintendent wisely

Tuesday and Wednesday, the Dowagiac Board of Education began the interview process for a new superintendent. In all likelihood, one of the six candidates interviewed this week will become the new Dowagiac Union Schools superintendent.

Each candidate was impressive in their own way, and now the board of education has a tough decision ahead of them.

We hope that they will choose wisely.

Though we understand the board of education is on something of a time crunch with current superintendent Paul Hartsig resigning at the end of the month to serve at Bath Community Schools, we hope the school board will take its time to thoroughly weigh each of the candidates to ensure they are putting the school district in good hands.

The next superintendent needs to be someone who can keep the forward momentum the district has cultivated over the last several years and can carry on the work started by the bond. The next superintendent will need to be interested in ensuring that the district moves in a positive direction.

As people who live, work and spend their time in Dowagiac, we only want to see the best for our school district. We want to see our next superintendent be someone who loves the children of Dowagiac and wants to see them succeed as much as the parents do. We want the person who leads our school district to be someone who wears the colors of orange and black with pride and willing to go the extra mile to make sure that Dowagiac shines.

We are anxiously awaiting the announcement of who our next superintendent will be, and we have full confidence in our board of education to choose the right person for the job.
